# The History of the Pokémon World: music and sound credits

## Score

The music on /lab/world-history (and in the videos it makes) is an original
score written for this film. It is not music from, or a cover or remix of,
any Pokémon game. It is one theme (a leitmotif) in D minor at 70 bpm, in a
24-bar form (the theme, a heroic bridge in the relative major, the theme
again), arranged as four stems of the same piece, in the same key, tempo and
length, so the film plays them together and mixes them per chapter. A held
chord rises under each slow-motion moment.

| File | Arrangement |
| --- | --- |
| `theme-dark.mp3` | The bed: slow strings and low choir, the theme on solo cello, an oboe in the bridge |
| `theme-deep.mp3` | Ruins and laboratories: low string ostinato, contrabass, marimba, a drum heartbeat, timpani |
| `theme-ice.mp3` | The cosmos and the snow: harp, celesta, glockenspiel, a high pad and high strings |
| `theme-epic.mp3` | Full orchestra and choir: violins, horns, trombones, trumpets, taiko, timpani, cymbals |
| `theme-hold.mp3` | The held chord for slow motion: strings, choir, high violins, celesta |

The score was written as MIDI and played with the **MuseScore General** sound
font (MuseScore_General_HQ, v0.2.1), which is released under the
[MIT licence](https://opensource.org/license/mit) by S. Christian Collins
(<https://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/musescore/soundfont/MuseScore_General/>; the
Debian package `musescore-general-soundfont` carries the licence text). Parts
of it are public domain or CC0: its ensemble strings are from Versilian
Studios Chamber Orchestra 2 Community Edition by Sam Gossner, Simon Dalzell
and Elan Hickler ([CC0 1.0](https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/),
<https://github.com/sgossner/VSCO-2-CE>), its open crash samples from the
Versilian Community Sample Library (CC0, <https://github.com/sgossner/VCSL>),
its drumline samples by S. Christian Collins and Amir Oosman (CC0), and its
grand piano from a verified public-domain AKAI S5000 set. The rest derives
from the Fluid (R3) GM sound font by Frank Wen (MIT). Rendered with
FluidSynth (LGPL; used as a tool, not distributed). Encoded as 56–64 kbps
MP3 (loudness-matched stems).

## Sound

The ambience (space, wind, snow, storms, rain, the sea, caves, fire,
forests, crickets, a laboratory, a hall) and every hit (impacts with a
sub-drop and a shimmer tail, rumbles, thunder, glass chords of light) are
synthesised in the browser at play time (src/lib/film-sound/). No
recordings are used.
